Chipping: Notes

  • Chipping is very similar to putting. There are THREE big differences between putting and chipping, called the big three. Besides the big three, chipping is the same as putting.

  • 1 - you use an iron instead of putter for chipping. An iron has loft, which means the clubface is at an angle to the ground and causes the ball to go in the air.

  • 2 - your ball position is towards your back foot in chipping

  • 3 - you will push the grip forward in chipping, forming a lowercase y. You also shift your weight forward. These two factors help you descend on the ball, creating a downward motion that best uses the loft on the iron.

  • When do you chip? You chip when you are on the fringe, or close by but not on the green. The ball will fly 1/3 of the distance and roll the remaining 2/3 of the distance. Your goal is to get the ball in the air until it reaches the green, and then roll out to the hole.
