The 2D’s: Notes
In golf, you must always have a target in mind, whether it be the hole or simply where you want the ball to go. The two aspects of choosing a target are the 2D’s: Distance and Direction.
Direction: this is where the target is
Direction is determined primarily by the clubface. Wherever your clubface is at impact determines where the ball goes.
Several other things control direction. Your target line is the line from your ball to your target. Your clubface should be aiming down this line. Your feet and shoulder line should be parallel to the target line. You can also use the line on the clubhead and ball to help aim.
Lastly, the actual swing path of your clubhead determines direction. Your swing path should be straight back along the target line, and straight through along the target line.
Distance: this is how far away your target is
How far the ball goes is determined by how far back you take the club, or the length of your swing. If you take a longer swing, the ball will go farther.
You can use your stance to help with distance as well. If you have a lag putt (a longer putt), separate your feet more and swing to your back foot and then through to your front foot. If you have a short putt, narrow your feet and swing to your back foot and then through to your front foot.
